Limited is a part of the medium seeks industry located
in Borivali, Mumbai. It is a family owned company
that went in for a public issue of shares in 1995.
The Software support function in the Telecon Company
consists of a highly dedicated team of young persons
who are not really software professionals but who
have learnt the science individually in the school
of hard knocks. A very prestigious Government of India
project in the area of fax store and forward has been
given to your company by the MTNL. Software to run
the proposed program has to be developed in house
and then alone can the project be executed. This is
one of the terms in the MTNL contract.
The software team has already
spent three months and not come up with any meaningful
results. They have been working night and day on
the job. Then suddenly in May 1997 they have come
up with a program, which has been tried and tested
for quality as well as for accuracy and reliability.
The MTNL project has been saved in the nick of time.
A euphonious Project Manager has directly recommended
that the software team be given an incentive by
way of an annual increment thrice that of the other
good performers. Top Management has agreed to the
recommendation. The team has been issued congratulatory
letters but the actual increment has not been given
yet.
You are the HRD Manager who
has not a party to this decision and subsequently
you find out that:
Ø There was only one dedicated and competent
person in that team and the others were only busy
playing second fiddle to him.
Ø The competent person in the team privately
does not like to be equated to other no-performers
in his team and resents getting the same quantum
increment.
Ø Giving this team a special annual increment
would de-motivate other teams and other departments
since it comes across as if the Company rewards
